Micro-Manager-2.0alpha is an early preview of the next-generation Micro-Manager, an open-source application for controlling motorized microscopes and acquiring scientific images. Developed at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), it offers a device-agnostic control layer so you can configure and run cameras, stages, shutters, filter wheels, light sources, autofocus modules, and other peripherals from a single interface.

Key capabilities:

  • Integration with ImageJ/Fiji for visualization, analysis, and plugins
  • Multi-dimensional acquisitions (time series, z-stacks, multiple channels, multiple positions)
  • Live imaging, hardware triggering, autofocus control, and configurable workflows
  • Broad hardware compatibility via community-maintained device adapters
  • Scripting and automation APIs (Java; Python via Pycro-Manager)
  • Rich metadata support and standard file formats (e.g., OME-TIFF)
  • A modernized, extensible architecture introduced in the 2.0 line

Alpha status:

  • Intended for testing and early adopters; some features may be incomplete and stability may vary
  • Hardware compatibility can differ from stable releases; check current device support and documentation

Licensing and availability:

  • Free and open source (BSD license)
  • Cross-platform, with strongest support on Windows; macOS and Linux support may depend on device drivers
